The Community Exchange System (CES) is a global network of alternative exchange systems, operating on mutual credit principles. Currently (March 2012) there are over 395 exchanges in 43 countries in the Community Exchange Network. Many of these are timebanks, some with the hour as their unit of value; others with the minute. Although the system is internet based, it works for those without computers through a system of 'branches' and local area co-ordinators. All exchanges can trade with each other and credits earned in one area can be spent in another. LETS-style and timebank groups are invited to join the CES network and become part of an expanding, global 'new money' system. The CES has seen phenomenal growth in recent years, particularly since the start of the global financial crisis in 2008.
